Historical and modern day quotes on the value of fasting.
Below are some of the best fasting quotes from both modern medical and health professionals as well as famous historical figures. History shows us that fasting was considered a natural therapy for so many of the ails of the past.
Modern professionals are telling us the same is still true; that fasting will alleviate a host of ailments that plague us in our modern world.
The fasting quotes are divided into four categories: Historical, Modern M.D.s, Other Health Professionals, and Religious Writers and Figures.
“Fasting is the greatest remedy– the physician within.”
Philippus Paracelsus, one of the three fathers of Western medicine
“Instead of using medicine, better fast today.”
Plutarch, a Greek biographer and moralist
“The best of all medicines is resting and fasting.”
“Everyone has a doctor in him; we just have to help him in his work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. …to eat when you are sick, is to feed your sickness.”
Hippocrates, one of the three fathers of Western medicine
“A little starvation can really do more for the average sick man than can the best medicines and the best doctors.”
Mark Twain, in My Debut As a Literary Person
“Nature heals, the doctor helps!”
Paracelsus, writing about activating
the “doctor inside”, or our own healing nature
“Every fool can fast, but only the wise man knows how to break a fast.”
G.B. Shaw, writer
“Humans live on one-quarter of what they eat; on the other three-quarters lives their doctor.”
Egyptian pyramid inscription, 3800 B.C.
“I believe that fasting is the “missing link” in the Western diet.”
“From a medical point of view, I believe that fasing is not utilized often enough.”
“…. fasting is one of the best overall healing methods because it can be applied to so many conditions and people.”
“Fasting is the single greatest natural healing therapy. It is nature’s ancient, universal ‘remedy’ for many problems. Animals instictively fast when ill.”
all from Elson Haas, M.D. in Staying Healthy with Nutrition
“Due to [the] effects of fasting, a fast can help you heal with greater speed; cleanse your liver, kidneys, and colon; purify your blood; help you lose excess weight and water; flush out toxins; clear the eyes and tongue; and cleanse the breath.”
James F. Balch, M.D., in Prescription for Nutritional Healing
“Therapeutic [water] fasting accelerates the healing process and allows the body to recover from serious disease in a dramatically short period of time.”
“Fasting, combined with nutritional competence, removes the most significant causes of disease.”
“Therapeutic fasting is not a mystical or magical cure. It works because the body has within it the capacity to heal when the obstacles to healing are removed. Health is the normal state. Most chronic disease is the inevitable consequence of living a life-style that places disease-causing stressors on the human organism. Fasting gives the body an interlude without those stressors so that it can speedily repair or accomplish healing that could not otherwise occur in the feeding state.”
“The job of fasting is to supply the body with the ideal environment to accomplish its work of healing.”
“The body’s wondrous ability to autolyze (or self-digest) and destroy needless tissue such as fat, tumors, blood vessel plaque, and other nonessential and diseased tissues, while conserving essential tissues, gives the fast the ability to restore physiologic youth to the system. By removing or lessening the burden of diseased tissue, including the fatty tissue narrowing the blood vessels, fasting increases the blood flow and subsequent oxygenation and nutrient delivery to vital organs throughout the body.”
all from Joel Fuhrman, M.D., in Fasting and Eating for Health
“Man is the only ‘animal’ who persists in eating when he is sick, even though he may have no appetite and food makes him nauseous.”
“Fasting is a calming experience. It is restful. It relieves anxiety and tension. It is rarely depressing and it is often downright exhilarating.”
Alan Cott, M.D., from Fasting: The Ultimate Diet
“Fasting is the strongest appeal to the human being’s natural powers of healing and self-rejuvenation, on both a spiritual and corporeal level.”
Heinz Fahrner, M.D.
“I often observe in the fasting participants that by four days of fasting, concentration seems to improve, creative thinking expands, depression lifts, insomnia stops, anxieties fade, the mind becomes more tranquil and a natural joy begins to appear. It is my hypothesis that when the physical toxins are cleared from the brain cells, mind-brain function automatically and significantly improves and spiritual capacities expands.”
Gabriel Cousins, M.D. (psychiatry)
“Although beginning my practice in fog-covered medical superstition, I came to the conclusion that only nature can practice medicine.”
“I contend that during illness feeding becomes a burden to the sick. It uses energy that otherwise would be used to fight the illness.”
both from Dr. Edward Dewey
“I must say in all seriousness that fasting when combined with a properly selected diet is the nearest approach to a ‘cure-all’ that is possible to conceive– profoundly simple and simply profound!”
John Tilden, M.D.
“Religious ascetics, who led their lives abstaining from food, came to the conclusion that fasting improved not only their spiritual state, but also their physical condition, and through fasting many diseases could be cured.”
Dr. Inamura Motoo
“I assert that fasting is the most efficient means for correcting any disease.”
Adolph Mayer, M.D., from his book Fast Cures – Wondercures
“Fasting creates a condition of low concentration of toxic wastes in the circulatory system. This is sensed by the plasma membrane of each cell and each cell will then let go of its load of toxic wastes.”
After some time of sun gazing, I now feel my third eye or pineal gland shaking intensely, I have never had any colds or flu for
many years, I become more focused and I am in ecstatic mood for most of the time.
Many people said that sungazing improves their vision, cure many diseases or help them be able to go without food after a 9-month sun gazing process is complete. HRM claimed Sun-gazing can even help to activate the third eye and therefore it can awaken dormant talents within you. HRM himself has
undergone a 411-day test without eating anything.
After some months of sun gazing, now I live on juice, mostly orange juice. I have done 2 water fast and am gonna do the third fast with Martin and our friend from Budapest, Roberta.
I sleep less and less every day. The clean blood and the smooth flow of the body bring me lots of peace, mind clarity, creativity, and intuitive powers. I inwardly understand clearly that we are Energy, not the body coz an electric current always pours down onto my Crown Charka 24/7. That’s the way to absorb Universal energy and manifest our dreams very fast. We have lots of energy and free time to meditate, play, laugh, create, learn new skills, travel around the world… I have a lot of free time now focusing on our projects: writing many books, blogs, websites…I feel like I am becoming invincible every day.
It was amazing that due to my meditation for over 12 years that I could look at the Sun up to 2 hours on some days and my eyes still didn’t hurt, because it is recommended that we should start from 10 seconds of sungazing and increase 10 more seconds everyday until we reach 45 minutes of sungazing, which takes 9 months and we should sun gaze at safe hours when the UV index is below 1, meaning 1 hour after sunrise and 1 hour before sunset. That’s why I found out that if your vibration is high enough, you can look at the sun throughout the day and as long as you like.
Here are some testimonies that I have found on the Internet. Hope that the stories will inspire you on your journey to rediscover your Great Self.

2. The case involving healing from blood cancer is mentioned at www.anandaproject.org/sunyoga/photos.html where a picture
shows a student of “Sunyogi” Umasankar-ji, who cured himself of acute blood cancer through the practice of sun yoga. As former site author “Ben” explains: “Krishan Pal started practicing sun yoga in May 2001 after the doctor had told him that he only had two months to live. He practiced every day, initially for half an hour from 7.30 to 8 am, then gradually extended the practice to
one hour daily. After a few months, he was gazing at the sun at midday for half an hour. One and a half years later the doctors discovered that the cancer was gone. In the photograph [taken at 8am] … he is in a state of meditative bliss, not staring at the sun. I do not have much more information, however it can be acquired from the doctors at Chandigarh PGI hospital in Haryana, North India.”
Note that Hira Ratan Manek strongly advises against sungazing outside the safe periods (safe = UV index less than 2).
Wayne H. Purdin* reports a third case of cancer healed involving sungazing in the following:
“I was just reading ‘Spontaneous Healing’ by Dr. Andrew Weil. On pages 128-129, he relates the story of Shin-ichiro Terayama, who developed kidney cancer in 1984. Sent home from the hospital as a hopeless case, he awoke the next day surprised to find
himself alive and ‘was aware of a great desire to watch the sun rise. He went to the eighth floor rooftop of his apartment house, where he could look over the skyline of Tokyo. He recited Buddhist mantras and poems, put his hands together to pray, and awaited the sun. When it rose, he felt a ray enter his chest, sending energy through his body. I felt something wonderful was going to happen, and I started to cry, he says. I was just so happy to be alive. I saw the sun as God. When I came back down to my apartment, I saw auras around all my family members. I thought everyone was God.During the next few weeks, Shin observed the strict diet [macrobiotic] and performed daily the important ritual of watching the sun rise from his roof – the one thing he looked forward to each day… Today Shin is not merely a cancer survivor. He is a transformed being who neither looks, acts nor thinks like his old self.’
Since I have been sungazing (at 18 min 40 sec) I have found my attitude toward my leukemia change dramatically. Before, I was always on top of it, getting a blood test once a month, trying the latest antileukemic diet, herb or supplement, and researching. Now, I leave my health, as I do every aspect of my life, in God’s hands. Shin had a similar change in attitude. What is it about sungazing that gives you the impetus to let go and let God? Could it be the tangible nature of sungazing in which you actually feel God touching you and come to know that he really will take care of you?

Once a lady said to her waiter in a restaurant, “Would you bring a bag for me so that I can carry home the leftover food for my dog?” And then her six year old son said, “Oh, mommy, are we going to get a dog?”

What’s the difference between stress, tension and panic?
Stress is when wife is pregnant,
Tension is when girlfriend is pregnant,
and Panic is when both are pregnant.
- I Understand
Inside the operating room, the patient was very nervous. He said to the doctor, “Doc., I’m so scared. It’s my first operation.” The doctor said, “Yes, yes, I understand exactly how you feel because it’s my first, too.”
- Fire in My Kitchen
There was a person whose house was on fire. He was very, very panicked and urgently called the fire department, “Emergency, emergency, please, quickly, there’s a fire, there’s a fire! Come quickly and put out the fire!” Then the fire department chief asked him, “But where’s the fire? Where did the fire break out?” “It’s in my house,” he said, “very urgent! It’s in my house! Come quick!” “Yes, I know it’s in your house. But where?” He said, “It’s in my kitchen!” The fire department chief lost patience and said, “Listen, I know that! But how do I get to your house? Do you understand me? How do I get to your house?” And the man said, “Don’t you have cars?”
There was a person who was a very, very, you know, kind of very terrible person, she used to lend money to everyone. She counted every penny.
And then one day, she was sick, and all the doctors already shook their heads, saying “There ‘s nothing we can do about it.” So she knew her time was up. So she called about fifty of her debtors to come next to her death bed, and then told a servant to bring all the papers, the IOU papers, in front of them and burned them all in front of them. And then one of the debtors was feeling very, kind of emotional and said, “Oh, madam, we have not paid you yet, how come you burned all the papers, the IOU papers.” And the madam, nearly dying, suddenly woke up, and looking them in the eyes, she said, “If I don’t burn all these, when I go down there (the underworld), how can I have any proof to get the money back from all of you?”

1. A VERY CLEVER DOG
There is a story called “The Clever Dog”. Once there was this family with a dog. One day they invited a guest to dinner. When the guest arrived, the dog did not say a word. It didn’t bark, nor bite. However, when the guest was having dinner with the family, the dog kept staring at him. It was also growling, not very loud, but it sounded very angry. It kept fixing its stare at the guest and growling at him nonstop. The guest was feeling very nervous. His heart was beating hard, and he kept looking back at the dog. The man and the dog were staring at each other, until the man could no longer stand it. He said to his host and the family, “Why, your dog looks so vicious!” Before the host could utter a reply, the little girl said, “I don’t think so! Normally it is not that violent! It is behaving like this because you are using his bowl!”
2. HE FEELING IS MUTUAL
There were two people who went on a blind date. After a while, they were so bored. It was a very boring blind date. Suddenly a friend of his called him on the phone, so he stepped away from the table in the restaurant, went outside and talked with the friend for a while. After he came back, he said to his female blind date, “I’m sorry, my grandfather has died. I have to go.” So the woman, who was very understanding, said, ¨Oh, of course, of course! That’s very good because if your grandfather didn’t die, mine must die.”
3. THE GENTLE DOG
There was a thief who went to a very out- standing looking mansion to steal something. Outside of the mansion, there was a sign with a picture of a dog’s head which said, “MEAN DOG INSIDE, PLEASE KEEP OUT!”
But the thief went inside and stole all the things he wanted. After he put them all in a bag and was on his way out, the thief added something under the sign. It said, “That dog was very gentle. Don’t misjudge it.”
There was a newly wed couple, and the husband could not tolerate his wife. He quarreled with her every day until he came close to a nervous breakdown. He then rushed to see a doctor.
“What’s wrong?” asked the doctor.
“Ah! I have been quarreling with my wife too much,” the man responded. “Now I am weak in both body and mind. What shall I do?”
“You need to do some exercises! I suggest you buy yourself a track suit and jog about ten kilometers each day, then call me in a week or two.”
The man said, “Okay!” and left. That day, he bought a track suit and started jogging.
A week later, the man called the doctor and the doctor asked, “How are you doing physically? Are you feeling better?”
“Better, much better!” said the man.
Then the doctor inquired, “How is your wife treating you?”
“How would I know?” the man replied, “I’m already seventy kilometers away from home!”
5. WHOSE SMELL
There was a couple that had a long marriage and no children, and perhaps they were a little bit lonely. So, the wife said that she wanted a dog to keep her company, and the husband said: ” A dog? Am I not enough for you?” The wife said, “Oh yes, but it’s different. I’m thinking of something lively. You know, he can walk me to the shop, and things like that, while you’re not here. I love you. It’s just that a dog is different. You aren’t comparing yourself to a dog, are you?” So the husband said: “All right. All right. But what will he eat?” “Oh,” the wife said, “Whatever we eat, he can eat. Dogs eat anything. The husband asked, ” And then, where shall he stay?” And the wife replied, “He can stay in here with us, in the house. Our house is big enough.” The husband was still very skeptical and reluctant and asked, ” But where will he sleep?” The wife answered, ” He can sleep in bed with us.” And so the husband asked, ” Well, how about the smell?” So the wife said, ” Well, if I can get used to it, so can he.”
1. FINDING A MEDICAL TERM
A man went into a doctor’s office and told the doctor that he had a problem. He said that he could not do anything around the house to help his wife at all. So the doctor gave him a good, thorough examination. The patient asked, “What is wrong with me, doctor? Just tell me in simpleterms .What’s wrong with me?” The doctor said, “Okay, really simply: You are lazy.” So the patient said, “Okay. But now you have to give me a medical term so that I can explain to my wife.”
2. GIVING THANKS!
A teenager had just received her permit to drive for the first time, so she drove her parents to the church. It was a hair-raising, goose-bump filled ride from the house to the church. After they finally arrived at the church, the mother got out. “Thank you!” And the daughter said, “Any time!” So the mother said, “ I wasn’t talking to you !””
3. UNINVITED GUESTS
After checking into his hotel room, a businessman saw a dead cockroach on the floor, so he called the service counter and demanded to speak to the manager.
When he got through, he complained with great, great commotion.
“Please calm down, sir,” said the manager.
“Since the cockroach is already dead, it won’t do you any harm.”
The businessman replied, “The deceased is fine, but the relatives and friends who come to attend his funeral really make me sick!”
4. WHY DOCTORS WEAR MARKS
Once a small child asked his father, “Father, why do doctors always have to wear masks in the operating room?” And the father replied, “In case something goes wrong, no one will know who they are.”
5. GOD’S CHILD
A preschooler asked his mother, “Mom, tomorrow our teacher is going to ask who my father is. What should I say?” The mother said, “Just tell her that God is your father!”
The next day, the boy went to school, and the teacher asked him, “Who is your father?” Scratching his scalp, the boy could not find an answer to the question. The teacher asked again, “Who is your father?”
The child confessed, “I used to think that Mr. Smith was my father. But yesterday my mother told me that I am the son of another person, and I cannot remember his name!”
I believe that when our cells become cleaner we can absorb the universal energy better to manifest our dreams.
I was always dreaming about doing a water fast for some time. My motivation behind that was to sleep less, work more efficiently, have a robust health, clean my cells to develop dormant talents within, such as writing, telepathy…and develop my spirituality.
At the beginning of February, last year, when I and my husband, Martin had just met each other for about 2 months, we had decided to do a 3 day water fast.
Martin used to do water fast for 14 days in 2008, so he passed the 3 days very easily even with a little bit weakness. But the three days were really a big challenge for me, if it had not been for Martin, I could have never fulfilled it.
We had gradually eaten less and less before that fast. On the last day before the fast we ate only some baby bananas. Each day of the fast we did 300, 400, even Marin did 1227 pushups on Feb 14, 2014. We practiced deep breathing, sunbathing, barefoot walking, laughter yoga to absorb the best energy in the universe; we then drank water until we felt full and finally meditated until we felt hungry again and the process just repeated like that.
We were on a hill where my friend has a farm with lots of fruits, vegetables and nature spring water. The first day was very smooth and the second day was great. I felt uplifted and very clear-minded. I worked a lot on the internet gathering information for our book “Laughing Universe”. It was a lifetime experience for me on the third day when I was so weak and my head was aching. I thought “If I don’t use all of my willpower to stand up now and do some push ups and drink some water, perhaps I will die now”. (At that time, I didn’t breathe deeply in bed much, but my second fast recently was easier as I learned the technique to take deep breaths in bed). Later, I ordered my mind, “Stand up, I am the champion. I am the hero. I can do anything. Now I will do 30 pushups”. Finally, I was able to get up, do pushups and drink some water. But soon after that the hunger pain continued to torture me. I was about to give up many times and wanted to lie down forever and I even couldn’t talk to Martin because sometimes he was somewhere else meditating, reading…But I gave commands to my mind again, “It’s just a challenge. I am the Energy. I am Love. I am eternal. I am the Almighty. I have enough personal Power to do anything. Now I will do 30 pushups.” Then I did it. It kept repeating like that until I finished my third day of fast successfully.
Two days ago I finished my second water fast in a miraculous way because I have learned more techniques and knowledge to overcome it.
The benefits are beyond imagination. If we had any bad habit before the fast then we could easily get rid of it because the fast can burn Karma and all of our preconceived ideas. It helps us to have a clear look to the magic of our body and the Universe.
I have written the following entry into my diary,
“My body is very efficient now to discriminate what is bad and what is good. Thanks, God. It just likes raw, easy to digest, high-vibration food now.
Actually it is more than a honeymoon. I feel so much sweetness, romantic, love in the air. I’m automatically in Samadhi. I took a bath. I clean body, mind and all organs. Now I really treasure the experience when we clean our body. Thank God to inspire me to do it. I like to feel this feeling all the time God, please let it be with me forever.
I saw light even in darkness, I was very sensitive, I understand how harmful sugar, seasoning and chemicals accumulated in our bodies.
I will fast n do yoga abdomen wash some days monthly. Even the process is not easy, but the reward is beyond imagination.”
Thanks for reading the article. I will return the Episode 2 about my second water fast experience.
For The World’s Evolution.
I rarely hitchike. In the recent years I stopped a car maybe 2 or 3 times. When I think about it, the main reason is probably the awkward feeling when I stand by the road and cars just keep passing me by. I understand the drivers’ mindset. There’s common prejudice and fear against hitchhiking across the society. Murder stories, rape, robbery… And even with no negative preconception, the drivers often act and play inside their box, bound by their habit, unable to respond flexibly enough to the surprising situation. It’s understandable. You don’t see many hitchhikers in this area, especially in winter.
But for me, today was different. It was a rare sunny day in the middle of winter. Sun was shining, the snow was glittering, the sky was blue and everything was just lovely and brilliant. My mood was up. I turned off my brain and went for a walk. I felt One with the nature, One with the Universe. I just kept walking down the road. There were almost no cars. I had all the road for myself. After some time I noticed a car approaching me slowly from the rear and I decided to take a ride. I must have been in the right mood alignment with the Universe, because the driver stopped immediately when seeing my signal. It turned out he was going to the same town I wanted to go. He was a pleasant company for the next 30 minutes of my life. We discussed the countryside, nature, travelling, skydiving and more… I left the car with thanks and an even higher elevated mood. And I feel it was mutual.
Lessons learned? I learned that when I get into alignment with the Universe and focus all my energy into one direction, the Universe will move my way. I learned that hitchhiking is (besides being more environmentally friendly and more cost effective) more fun than going by bus or walking. I learned that the people are good and wonderful and every connection we create elevates our beings and the whole Universe to a higher level. It is worth the effort to go look outside of our little box once in a while.
Imagine the possibilities. I dream of world without boundaries. I dream of world of sharing. I dream of travelling around the world while connecting with the cool happy people everywhere. We can save massive amounts of resources while opening our minds to the immense variety of cultures. We can learn from and inspire each other. We can have richer and more enjoyable lives if we leave our habits and illusive comfort behind. If we push our selves a little bit to taste the unknown. Today I just scratched the surface. I’m now eager to explore more possibilities and push my boundaries even further. Do you dare too?
